In Jambiani, Nobody Checks the Time, They Check the Tide

Living in Jambiani teaches you fast that nobody here checks the clock. The day follows the ebb and the flow, not a wristwatch, and that is something I have come to appreciate over the past years. When the water pulls back, the women of the village walk out to the seaweed beds close to the shore, a skill passed down through generations. Walk down to the beach yourself and you will see them there at work, no performance staged for tourists, just everyday life.

On the road outside the villa, traffic is not managed by lights but by goats, chickens, and the occasional cow that takes its time exactly where it wants to go. Houses in the village are built from coral stone, though most roofs today are corrugated metal rather than the palm thatch of decades past, and if you look closely you still notice how much craft sits in those old coral walls. Five times a day the call to prayer rises from the mosque and the rhythm of the village bends around it, whether you are religious yourself or not, you feel that a different kind of time is kept here than back in Bern or Zurich.

Coming from a background in mechanical engineering and later coaching, where process and efficiency were everything, this clockless way of living unsettled me at first, honestly it even irritated me. Now it is exactly what I like about Jambiani. This pole pole mentality, this slowly, slowly, which is not an excuse for carelessness but its own form of discipline, shaped by nature instead of a calendar. It is something you have to learn, I struggled with it in the beginning and, on certain days, I still do. My inner Swiss clockwork does not switch off just like that, and honestly, I do not want it to.

LITTLE POMPEJI Villa sits deliberately away from the waterline, about 250 metres inland, right inside this everyday village life, among the paths children take to school in the morning and fishermen use whenever the tide brings them back in. That was our decision when we arrived in Zanzibar years ago, not to build an isolated holiday bubble, but a place from which guests can genuinely experience Jambiani, with the beach just a short walk away.

Staying with us will not give you a polished resort experience, it will give you the chance to see the seaweed harvest happening right on the beach and hear the call to prayer drift over the palms at dusk. That, to us, is the real magic of Jambiani, and it cannot be staged, it can only be allowed to happen around you.
